What is Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem for men today, as statistics show that one in ten men will experience the issue at some point in time. The simple question of what it is can be answered without a whole lot of hesitation. It is simply impotence, or the inability to maintain an erection for an extended period of time. This causes satisfactory performance, and it can become a really big psychological problem for many men. There are quite a few causes for this condition, and most of them can be treated in some form or fashion. Only a small number of cases are caused by untreatable ills.

There are a few symptoms that let men know that they have erectile dysfunction. Obviously the overlying symptom is the inability to get and sustain a full erection. This can be broken down in a couple of ways, though. The first way to look at it is when a man cannot get a full erection. In this case, a “lazy erection” is an indication that the body’s mechanism for retaining blood in the penis is not working correctly. In addition to that, there are some cases where a man can get an erection when he’s sleeping or unaware. This indicates that perhaps there is some sort of psychological issue causing the erectile dysfunction.

Different men have different causes for erectile dysfunction. In most cases, the condition is caused by some sort of physical problem. It can either be a natural problem, like blood pressure of poor circulation, or it can be a psychological problem. The physical problems are typically things like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or a bad reaction to prostate surgery. It can also be caused by hormone deficiencies and sometimes it can come as a result of drug side effects. On the psychological end, erectile dysfunction can come as a result of relational problems. These problems are much easier to fix than the purely physical issues that cause ED.
